Albares asserts that Spain has a global foreign policy "that goes from Washington to Beijing."

Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares highlighted Spain's influence in the world this Sunday: "It has never had as much international influence as it does now. For the first time in history, it has a global foreign policy that stretches from Washington to Beijing," and it leads initiatives in the EU.
In an interview with La Vanguardia following the Copenhagen meeting with his EU counterparts, he emphasized that he presented a European action plan to address the war in Gaza : "More and more states are joining our position."
Regarding Spain's absence from the recent meetings on US tariffs and Ukraine, he responded that Spain is having its own voice in all the crises , that "a country's international influence is not measured by a photo," and that sometimes the price of appearing in a photo is precisely not having influence.
Africa and immigrationHe insisted that Spanish foreign policy extends from the United States (he cited as an example a new Spanish-American declaration 20 years later) to China (as a demographic, military, commercial, and UN Security Council power), passing through Africa: "We have just approved a new strategy and where we have a growing dialogue with these countries that are absolutely fundamental for Spain," referring to Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal.
Regarding immigration from this continent, he described Spain's migration policy as enormously successful thanks to cooperation with "friendly African" countries, and said that the latest Frontex figures reflect a 30% drop in the number of irregular migrants arriving in Spain and a 40% drop on the Canary Islands route, which he considers the most dangerous.
Europe versus IsraelRegarding the EU, he stated that "this is a moment in which Europe must take a leap forward in its autonomy and sovereignty, in which Europe must assert itself," protecting and developing aspects of its own community policy.
Furthermore, in the midst of the war in Gaza, Albares argues that "Europe cannot maintain its relationship with Israel under these circumstances as if nothing were happening" and that Spain is in favor of suspending the European trade agreement with the Israelis.
Flotilla to GazaOn the day a flotilla departs Barcelona for Gaza, he expressed his support: "As in previous similar situations, we will protect our citizens."
He emphasized that the government had previously been in contact with the flotillas regarding incidents and had provided diplomatic and consular protection: "In this case , the protection will be exactly the same as we have always offered from our nearest embassies."
Catalan in the EURegarding Catalan's official status in the EU, he responded that "sooner or later, Catalan and the rest of the Spanish state's official languages will also be official within the EU."
"The matter remains on the Council's table, and we will never withdraw it," he added.
